So you’re wondering what to do with an unused faux-wool car wash mitt, an old pair of black fleece mitts, and an old pair of black chenille gloves (you’re not alone,  it’s been a confounding daily ponderable for me, too).  Well, with these items, you can make a new friend.

Free crochet patterns: How to Crochet Sea Pennies

Free crochet patterns: How to Crochet Sea Pennies

Hello.

Today I'm going to share a short tutorial with you on how to crochet Sea Pennies!

I'm using Rico Creative Cotton and a Number 4 hook for mine, but you can use any wool and hook to get different sized Pennies (which is a nice idea for a chunky winter scarf methinks!).
The Pennies are really quite easy and created here using 12 Double Crochet stitches (US) and I'm sure some of you have already worked out how to do this, but anyway - here goes!

Let's get started.

Free crochet patterns: Fern Pattern

Free crochet patterns: Fern Pattern

the Fern from Crochet Bouquet
Lynn, a Crochet Bouquet reader from Hawaii, asked for help with the Fern pattern (pages 110-111).
I am really enjoying yourCrochet Bouquet book!
But I need your assistance for the fern pattern. I cannot understand the instructions/how are the clusters created? Do I work both sides of the chain?
Then I get lost when it says chain 5 and repeat the whole thing again/
Thank you and Aloha,
Lynn
I wrote back, telling her how the fern is constructed. Then I made a suggestion that will help any time you are confused by the jumble of symbols and abbreviations in a crochet or knitting pattern:
I know there are lots of words in the instructions. Maybe it would help if you copied out the instructions into lines where you could see everything better, and leave out some of the informational words. This is what I mean:

Free crochet patterns: Fish Family

Free crochet patterns: Fish Family
Hi! Here I am, looking for summer to come and with no very nice weather here in my town. And sometimes you know that bad weather means a lot of time to crochet nice things... ;-). So, let me introduce you my "Fish Family". I started crocheting one of these little fishes but couldn't avoid crocheting a lot of them!. They're really addictive, you know... As you will see, some of them are bigger than the others just because I crocheted them with a thicker yarn, but the pattern is the same. Would you like to know it? You will find it at the end of this post!

Gift present for kids: Rainbow Sunshine Plushie for hair accessories....

Gift present for kids:  Rainbow Sunshine Plushie for hair accessories....
I want to begin this tutorial with a little story. One day there was a little organic cotton rainbow be-ribboned plushie that was sketched and then stitched with love in a very messy upstairs room in a home somewhere in Minneapolis. It was a happy little plushie, made all the more so by the creation of its 3 identical siblings who sat on a sunny windowsill with the little plushie, keeping it company. T

But then, the plushie creator decided, I'll be damned if the corporate-toy-making-man can bully this little artist and stop the world from enjoying these little plushies and try to control the creative use of ribbon. Just like all the other sewing notions and art supplies in the world, ribbons deserve to be given free-expression too. Ribbons have feelings too!

Paper crafts: How to make a Kusudama

Kusudama are origami flower balls – technically they don’t need to be flowers but any polygonal orgami model, but traditionally these balls were made from actual flowers. The flowers used were medicinal herbs, hence the name kusudama, which is a portmanteau of kusuri (medicine) and dama (ball). Over time, people began making models of these balls in origami, as good luck charms or decorative gifts.
As you can probably tell from the fact that I’m posting 10 hours late, kusudama can be quite a labour of love. The one I will show you today has 40 individual flowers. The classic sakura model you may have seen in many places online takes 60 units, which are built up into flowers before being tied or glued together. If you enjoy paperfolding, however, making these elegant structures is a very relaxing pastime.
Paper crafts: How to make a Kusudama

To make this type of kusudama you’ll need:
  • 40 squares of paper – this design shows both sides of the paper, so I used double-sided origami paper.
  • needle and thread
  • string or ribbon for hanging and optional tassel
  • patience!
The flower shown here can seem really fiddly at first, but once you’ve done one or two and got a feel for how they fold together, you’ll find them much easier.
The first part is to precrease the paper so the flower folds together easily.

Halloween Nails art, more ideas

Halloween is celebrated to scare people. Everyone is dressed in the pumpkin attire. The colors of the Halloween season are black, orange, red, gold, copper etc. the Halloween nail art foes well on both the natural nails as well as the extended nails. Halloween nails can be done on your natural nails. And if you think that your natural nails are too short to portray the Halloween elements then there are also acrylic Halloween nails available to give your nails that spunky look.

Halloween Nails
Black and orange themed Halloween nails are the favorite. There are endless design and color combination to go with Halloween nails. The design on your nails is your style statement so you got to do it well. One good way to decorate your nails this Halloween is to paint your nails in orange and black on the alternate fingers and do a different design on each nails. A pumpkin on nail, a witch on the other, a witch cap on the third and so on and so forth.

Unique crafts for gifts: paper pens tutorial

Unique crafts for gifts: paper pens tutorial

A few weeks ago I had a major “I could make that” moment when one of my coworkers handed me a pen. It was free pen she’d gotten from the campus copy store, and the entire body of the pen was paper. It was lightweight, had a wonderful feel to it, and looked pretty sweet.
I stared at it and then said, “Hey, I could totally make one of these!”In addition to being practical, easy, fast and pretty, this is one of those often hard-to-find crafts that could actually serve as a perfectly guy-ish, useful, elegant and handmade item to give Dad on Father’s Day. Maybe not with the red floral pattern, but that blue one is reasonably manly, doncha think?

Halloween crafts: paper pumpkins

Halloween crafts: paper pumpkins

Now that we’re halfway through October it truly is the season of creepy dolls and intricately mutilated gourds. I’m not usually big on decorating, except at Christmas, because there just isn’t room in our place. (Where does Martha Stewart keep all her gold plated pine cones, swan feather wreaths and foil-wrapped heart garlands in the off seasons??)
While cruising the internet last week, I found this neat little pattern for paper lanterns. It might be the most diversely adjustable template I’ve ever seen, actually, but more on that in the coming months. It occurred to me that this template could be modified to make paper pumpkins. So I’ve made my own template based off that paper lantern one and made you a lovely autumn tutorial on how to put it together.

I have felt food on the brain at the moment.
Slightly obsessed. Today I headed over to a lovely little felt shop with a crafty friend to stock up on some new colours with these in mind. And doughnuts. Maybe bananas. Possibly sushi. Definitely some teeny tiny pretend chocolates.
